Development is an important sign of life in any community. Ask anyone who suffered during the Global Financial Crisis – a downturn that saw confidence disappear overnight, and really only return in the last 6 years.
As much as 20% of our workforce gains their living from the development/construction and related sectors that rely on confidence and investment.
Lifestyle is also a critical factor in community and having a Planning Scheme that delivers certainty is important for those who live here now and those who will arrive in the future.
What also needs to be considered is that opportunities may arise, never thought of at the time the planning scheme was written and require careful decision making based on performance, by Council for the greater good of the community.
You may be surprised to know that of all the Development Applications that are submitted to Council;
Less than 3%
are ever decided by Councillors
in the Council Chamber.
The majority are managed and decided by professional Council staff.
To demonstrate how genuine your Council is in this respect we have created Development i* to assist all in our community to have all planning matters available online with a variety of search fields and requests that suit your needs, circumstances and location.
I understand why people are concerned about certain Planning Scheme amendments and/or Council decisions and I undertake to do all I can to give communities greater involvement.
Ironically, Council is often criticised by sections of the community and the media for sticking to the Planning Scheme, when they themselves have not taken the time to participate in the process – as we saw with the apartments in Buddina last year.
(*) Developments under the auspices of Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) are displayed on their site. (ie Maroochydore City Centre and Aura).
